I sourced all of my information the film companies from http://www.imd
also by doing this task I have learnt which film companies produce and distribute crime/gangster films and this will benefit me in my exam.
Task 4
In this task, I have learnt that even the boring writing at the being of films inform you with so much detail nad I have also learnt how music and Dioguloc are balanced out to create a smooth pace film that the audience and understand. I will be using what I have learnt in this task to assist me in my film opening.
Task 5

Of all his crime films he has made The Departed is his masterpiece as it’s his most successful crime film.
I have sourced all my information on Martin Scorsese from http://www.imdb.com/ also this task has allowed me to reserch and examine how great crime genre directors direct thier fulm. And it has infulenced me to use some of Martian's used work in perevis films he used a lot of gun sound effects and diagetic sounds also, he used fast cuts in he's editing and his films have won countless awards showing me that hes work is reliable and good to use.
Task 6
Influences of style
Over the years crime/gangster films have changed and one of the noticeable changes is the dress code. If you have a look at the 1930s most films all the antagonist would want to stay in the shadows and be a ghost as they get their crime underway, And the way they would do this is by having wearing hats and long coats to blend in with public being a ghost.
Whilst I was researching the gangster/crime genre style I noticed that there are a clear difference gangster/crime films in Britain and American ones. British gangster/crime genre tend to wear jogger hoodies & tracksuits, and trainers, however, it’s the complete opposite to American gangster/crime genre’s they tend to wear suits, watches long black coats and black polished shoes.
In the Goodfellas, the conventions of suits are seen in the gangster/crime film. The Goodfellas was set in 1967 and in theses times the suit was the trend this was because the public overtime noticed that the suits were a sign of power and this judgment was based on the gangsters wearing the suits and having power over areas at the time.
My research into gangster/crime genres styles has given me and greater understanding of what kind of costumes I will use in my film opening. The Godfather has the typical mob/mafia style suits (black suits and tuxedo’s) so the Godfather is an ideal film to side for its style of costumes, and it will serve me well in my film opening.
I have used photo peach to show how the style of crime/gangster genre has changed over the years, also by doing this task I have learnt how style has changed and how I can use the new or old styles in my film opening.
I have looked at three films the most successful, the most profitable and most influential crime films. By doing this task I can get ideas to experiment with in my planning stages, for example, I will add some sort of enigma just like in Batman with the masks. Also in Shawshank Redemption and Four Brothers, they both have a non-diegetic sound or music to it and it's always playing in the background so this has influenced me to try it out in my planning and see if it will work.
Task 8
There have been many of theorists that have come up with narrative structures of their own but there are only four theorists that are important and have been deemed correct. Tzvetan Todorov, VladimirProp, Claude Livi-Strauss, Roland Barthes.
Tzvetan Todorov
Todorov's theory was that every film followed 5 stages.
1. Equilibrium
This is when everything is well and running smooth as everyone is happy.
2. A disruption
This is the part of the film when something has disrupted the happy and playful habitat.
3. Realisation to the disruption
This is when the disruption in the film has been noticed.
4. Restored order
This the part of the film when the characters set out to restore order to the disruption.
5. Equilibrium
This stage is at the end of the film and is when the problem has been sorted out and everything is back to normal.
You see this theory in Spiderman it has all of the stages that Todorov states.
This theory is easy to apply to my planning of my film opening, and as this theory is used in most films it will be good to do something that the audience is familiar with.
Vladimir Prop
Prop discovered that all characters fall into 7 broad character types.
1. The villain
Locked in a constant struggle with the hero, often trying to harm princess.
2. The donor
Gives the hero an object or a piece of information that helps them prepare for what is to come.
3. The helper
Assists the hero with their quest often referred to as their 'sidekick'.
4. The princess
Needs assistance from the hero, usually because they are in some form of danger, typically the princess is the victim within the narrative.
5. The dispatcher
Is the character who sends that hero on their mission or quest.
6, Hero
Reacts to the donor and saves the princess, often resulting in them falling in love with the princess
.
7. False hero
May appears good but has an ulterior motive, or attempts to take credit for the hero's actions.
You can see props theory in uses when you watch Batman dark night rises as it follows all the stages that props has specified.
This theory would work really well for my film opening as I can highlight my hero or villain by using this theory.
Claude Livi-Strauss
Claude Livi Struss's theory was that every film or narrative will have something he called a binary opposite .
Here are some binary opposites that you'll see in a crime/gangster film.
Good vs Bad
Crime vs Law
Criminals vs Police
Heroes vs Villains
You can see the use of Stauss's theory in White house down as the police are fighting criminals.
Claude Levi Struss's theory is a key theory to use as we see binary opposites in crime/gangster films for escape you would see crime vs law so using this binary opposite in my film opening will give it that gangster/crime look and feel to it.
Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes described Five Codes which are woven into any narrative.
The Hermeneutic code (the voice of the truth)
Is the way the story avoids telling the truth or revealing all of the facts, in order to drop clues throughout that will add to the mystory.
The enigma/proairetic code (Empirical Voice)
The way the tension is built up and the audience is left guessing what will happen next.
The Semantic code (The voice of the person)
The semantic code points to any element in the text that suggests a suggest a particuler, often additional, meaning by the way of connotation which the story suggests.
The symbolic code (The voice of the symbols)
Similar to the semantic code, however, it acts on a wider level -organising semantic meanings into broader and deeper sets of meaning (this is typically done by the use of antithesis where new meanings arise out of conflict and opposing ideas.)
The Cultural code (The voice of science)
Looks at the audience wider cultural knowledge, morality and ideology. This gives more context and meaning to the text.It references how to think of the world, and how we think it works.
You can see the use in Bathers theory in Harry Potter and the goblin of fire as Voldemort is redirected and the audience is waiting to find out what he'll do next.
This is a great theory and I'll consider using it for my planning. But I won't be using this theory for my film opening as it's too complex to use but I will be using the enigma as it will draw in my audience and keep them guessing what's going to happen next.
Task 9
I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy.
My target audience will range between 18-25 males I've picked these ages because 18-25-year-olds are the ones with the most disposable income also they are most likely to go to the cinema compared to 40 or 50-year-olds. Furthermore my target audience will be 18-25 year olds which are male I say this because official sites have proven that males are more likely to go out and watch a crime film in the cinema, also most crime films are violent are have senses that be unsuitable for younger viewers so have my age rae for my target audience is very important. I know that my target audience is going to be 18-25 males year olds because it's been this way for years man are more likely to watch crime/gangster films and they are usually are aged because of 18-15.
The people that work for BBFC will watch a film that's about to be reassessed and it’s important to know that they will sit through a whole film to give it an age rating certificate also the do this to protect unger views from seeing violent or harmful content. They reach an overall rating by using their standards and criteria contained in our Classification Guidelines.
Because my target audience based around theses groups the BBFC certificate would be a 15. This because 15 certificate films would most likely contain:
-
Strong language
-
Drug taking
-
Dangers behavior
-
Nudity and sexual scenes
-
Strong violence
This is what I believe my target audience will look like.
But these type things (Strong language, Drug taking, Strong violence) are common in crime/gangster films so the BBFC ratings are perfect for me.
I have created a survey using SurveyMonkey to get an idea and find out what my target audience would like to see in my film opening.
Task 3
The Godfather
the production company that made The Godfather was Alfran Productions they don't make any other gangster/crime films but they have made films like Little Fauss and Big Halsy which is a Drama/Romance and also Making it which is a comedy/drama these two films don't come close to The Godfathers gangster/crime genre. The Godfather had a lot of distributors but the biggest one out of all of them is Universal Pictures they have distributed gangster/crime films such as Cop Car and God’s Pocket.
Universal Pictures creates and distributes theatrical and non-theatrical filmed entertainment. Universal's theatrical slate includes films developed internally, along with co-productions, acquisitions, and films developed by outside partners and distributed by the studio.
